Spread the love

“God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7 KJV

More than a century ago, one of the greatest philanthropists of history was George Moore. Once while reading the Bible he came across the words of Jesus in John 5: 24, “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life”. After this, his life was transformed from a traditional religious Christian into a dynamic believer. From then on he delighted in giving away his money to the needy. Every New Year’s Day, as he opened a new calendar, he inscribed on the flyleaf these lines – “What I spent, I had; what I saved, I lost; what I gave, I have.” Moore would begin the year by sending gifts to support Christ’s work around the world. He started many missions himself. “If the world only knew half of the happiness that a man has in doing good, it would do a great deal more”, he said.

That conviction led him to the slums of London where he not only gave money but also his personal care to the downtrodden. He proclaimed, “I believe the gospel, I love the Lord Jesus. I want to give all that I have and am to help the suffering.” On the wall of Moore’s study was an illuminated plaque with the words of I Corinthians 13th Chapter. In very large bold letters at the top were the words, “Love Never Fails” and at the bottom, “Now Abides Faith”. The union of love and faith was “the secret” of Moore’s life.

Dear friends, let the wonderful inscription George Moore put on his calendar inspire us and motivate us. Let it be our motto for this year. Let us remember the words of our Lord Jesus. It is more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20: 35) and let us give our time, energy, resources and ourselves for others. Let us put our faith to work. Whatever we do, let it be done with the love of Christ.

_Dear Lord, let me not be selfish and save my possessions for me and my family, but open my heart and my hands and give generously to the needy. Let me experience the joy of giving. Help me follow Your example and give my time, energy and resources to the poor and the suffering. Amen._
